The first of of the mouth parts, located on the fourth somite (= cephalon somite four), near the opening of the mouth. It is a sturdy, heavily chitinized organ consisting of one piece that ends in a row of teeth and has a tubercular, molar-like area; it carries a usually three-segmented palp. It is used for breaking up and chewing the food.
