Closer to the body (or center of the body). The proximal part of an appendage is its base, i.e. the part closest to the body. The terms proximal and distal can be used regardless of the position in which the appendage is directed, while terms like ventral, dorsal, anterior and posterior in such a movable organ may be confusing.
